First, let’s review history. Marvel was starting from the Marvel comics is a brand name and primary imprint of Marvel Worldwide Inc.In 2009, The Walt Disney Company get Marvel Entertainment which is Marvel Worldwide’s parent company. All the Marvel movie are refer to the Marvel comic. In The first Marvel’s hero was Iron Man. Iron Man movie had first published in 2008. According to Rotten Tomatoes, Iron Man score 93% out of 100%. Iron Man is a catalyst for the MCU, providing an original story for the role of the Avengers leader one day. Nowadays, Marvel had come out many of different character of superheroes such as Captian America, The Hulk, Doctor Strange, Black Widow,Thor, Captian Marvel and others. Captian Marvel was the latest women hero in 2019 and she was today’s hot topic in the world. She is really hot and power in the Marvel movie. Everyone will love her after watching her movie.

Today, superhero movies are increasingly popular with the story-lines, almost as much as superheroes successful with the happy ending. These types of movies attract many superhero movie fan, no matter young or old generation. What is the significance of the superhero movie? The significance of the superhero is that heroes are always associated with positive images and characteristics. They can guide viewers to believe that the hero is from or born in the country. The United States is a country with strong economic and reliability. Therefore, the audience will consider relying on or move to the United States. For example, many Malaysians commented on the account of US President Barack Obama’s Facebook and collected a signature in a letter to the White House. The move is a concern for the dissatisfaction with the 2015 Malaysian election. Malaysians are seeking outside help to interrupt the business facts of their country. In the White House, the White House urged the Malaysian government to respect the rule of law and criticized Malaysia for instigating the expansion of the insurgency law in order to oppose the government’s criticism. (Rogin, 2015)

For those who know about Cicakman. Which movie do you prefer more? On the left hand side was the Spiderman from Marvel or Cicakman was the superhero from Malaysia comedy-superhero film? What different of these two superhero character? Why Malaysian prefer Spiderman from Marvel more than Cicakman?

Culture Imperialism

What is culture and ? Every country have their own culture in their life. According to Kim Ann Zimmermann ,culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. While what is culture imperialism? According to Kelvin McCarthy, cultural Imperialism is the idea that one culture can either influence or dominate another in much the same way as nations have invaded and controlled other nations. 

Problem

Superhero movies have been popular around the world in recent years, appealing the focus on academic research in superhero movies is still a very new field research is especially in Malaysia. In Malaysia’s first superhero movie “Cicakman”, as Malaysia’s first superhero Movie. Unfortunately, Malaysia lacks sufficient research related to film production. Due to the lack of research on Cicakman, many people will think that Cicakman is only a ‘copycat’ film from Marvel rather than localizing a global trend. The film was not evaluated before the film was marked as “copycat”.

IMPACT

Marvel movie had gain a lot of profits. After Marvel had become the hot topic in the world, the hero trend invade into Malaysia’s market. The business people start come out the product that related to the Marvel heroes such as clothes, cup, toy and others. The Marvel fans will be crazy collect everything that related to Marvel. This was the Marvel movie had influences Malaysia’s culture become a Western’s culture. For example, in Gurney Paragon Penang BookXcess Bookstore there are art theme from Marvel. This was the hot review and topic that attract people visit the bookstore.

From the paragraph on above, Marvel had trade widely into Malaysia’s market. What influence to Malaysia when Marvel had trade in to Malaysia’s market? Malaysia had follow the superhero film idea and come out a comedy superhero film named Cicakman in 2006 which is almost same with Marvel superhero. Cicakman will become the Malaysia’s Marvel but it still could not acquire Malaysian to be fond of it. Marvel first movie which is Iron Man already get the Malaysian heart and always the best movie ever in their mind.

Marvel had slowly become the pop culture in Malaysia. What is pop culture? According to Cambridge dictionary, pop culture is music, TV, cinema, books and others that are popular and enjoyed by ordinary people, rather than experts or very educated people. For example, today Marvel consider as one of the pop culture in Malaysia which is the top and hot topic in ordinary people conversation.

On the others side, the superhero also will have the negative influence to Malaysian. Marvel superhero movie had changing the Malaysian beliefs. People who are crazy in the superhero will believe that the heroes are from or born in the real world. If the viewer persistence believe there are heroes assist in reality will occurs a lot of problem. For example, they will imagine they will be the hero to save the world or dreaming want to marry them. You know right, human mind are mystical….So, this is consider as a negative influence from the Marvel movie.

In the addition, the content of Marvel movie including the fight and a bit violence scenes that could influence the culture and behaviors of kid who had watched Marvel movie in their life. Through the fighting scenes, the kid will misunderstood that fight is a superhero positive image means superhero are using fighting to save the war. Kids during cognitive process will be gather, sort, and process information from around them, using the data to develop perception and thinking skills so kids maybe will be absorb the wrong information not under the leadership of an adult and did the wrong thing in their life.

In the conclusion, although Marvel movie had bring any negative or positive influences to Malaysia but do not represent the entire population of Malaysia was influencing by Marvel. Every people had their own right and also have their own beliefs, religions and behaviors, and stick to their own culture. Not everyone will always follow the movie and change their own culture because they are still staying in Malaysia and Malaysia’s culture will not be changing in the life.
